Balatonrendes between the Lakeshore and Hills

Balatonrendes is located on the northern shore of Lake Balaton between Badacsony and Révfülöp and is considered the smallest settlement on the lakeshore. Badacsony is located in the surrounding area of Balatonrendes. The settlement’s location on the northern shore is defined by the relationship between the lake and the rising terrain. As a result, Balatonrendes represents a geographically clearly defined side of Lake Balaton, where the shore and elevations serve as points of orientation. Gentle Slopes on the Northern Shore

The village lies at the foot of Rendesi-hegy. From there, the terrain slopes gently down toward Lake Balaton and rises toward the summit. Boncsos-tető is located in the surrounding area of Balatonrendes. Agár-tető lies in the wider regional surroundings of Balatonrendes. Thus, the landscape orientation extends from the foot of Rendesi-hegy via nearby Csönge-hegy to the more broadly defined elevations in the region. The place can therefore be imagined as terrain between the lake and the summit, rather than as a uniformly flat lakeshore area.

Route 71 through the Village

Route 71 runs through Balatonrendes. It gives the village a direct road connection along the northern shore of Lake Balaton. The route is therefore an independent geographical point of reference alongside the lakeshore and Rendesi-hegy. When locating the village on Lake Balaton, the course of the road, its position on the shore, and the rising terrain are different characteristics of the place. The place name “Rendes” is first documented in writing in 1328. This date anchors the name of Balatonrendes in a medieval written reference. Remains of a Roman-era villa were found beside the road leading to the Tepécs-hegyi quarry. The find is located on a specifically identified section of road and adds an archaeological reference to the historical picture of Balatonrendes. The place name and the structural remains thus represent different forms of historical evidence at the same location.
