A landscape between the lake and volcanic cones

The Tihany Protected Landscape Area covers 1,658 hectares and is now a landscape unit within the Balaton Uplands National Park. Its two strictly protected areas include Bozsai Bay and Külső-tó. Around 50 geyser cones are still visible on the peninsula. The largest is the Aranyház Geyser Cone, which takes its name from the yellow lichens growing densely on it. These geological formations and protected areas give the nature experience in Tihany a tangible connection to the landscape.

Echo Hill also connects a place with a remarkable natural phenomenon. Shouted words are reflected back from the abbey’s north side, about 300 metres away. The sound takes approximately two seconds to travel there and back, covering almost 700 metres. These figures describe the echo effect and make it a vivid experience for anyone who wants not only to see Tihany’s landscape, but also to hear it.

Routes with different highlights

The 4.7-kilometre Legenda Loop starts at Tihany’s ferry landing and passes, among other places, Echo Hill, the Benedictine Abbey and the Barátlakások. The walking route brings together different aspects of the town: scenery, a distinctive echo spot and historic buildings. Those who prefer a nature trail can follow the Lóczy Nature Trail, which has seven stations, each linked to a point of interest.

The Levendula Loop starts at the Lavender House and ends at Lavender Tihany and its distillery. Along the route, visitors can see Hungarian Grey cattle and ground squirrels introduced by Balaton Uplands National Park; encounters with the animals may vary by season. The Levendula Loop therefore offers a different focus from the Legenda Loop: animal watching and the route’s two endpoints are key points of reference here, while the Legenda Loop connects Echo Hill, the abbey and the Barátlakások.

Experience monastic history and lavender

The Remetetelep, locally known as the Barátlakások, comprises cells, a chapel and a refectory established by Orthodox monks of the Greek rite between the 11th and 14th centuries. The caves were cut into 20-metre-high basalt tuff on the eastern side of Óvár. After a rockfall in 1952, only three of the cave group remain visible. The settlement is considered the only relatively well-preserved hermitage settlement in the Carpathian Basin and Central Europe.

Tastings include the “King Andrew” liqueur, with 40% alcohol, and “Queen Anastasia,” with 35% alcohol, as well as salted snacks from the abbey. In winter, herbal tea from Father Gellért is served; in summer, lavender and lemongrass syrup. These seasonal differences make the time of year a tangible part of the visitor experience.

At the Lavender House Visitor Centre, a short film and an interactive exhibition introduce the volcanic landscape, the centuries-long coexistence of people and nature, and the lavender culture that grew from it. The centre also offers an adventure park and craft programmes. The Lavender Tihany visitor centre invites visitors to explore an exhibition about lavender and its processing, as well as Tihany’s lavender distillery.
