Nature and Geology in Felsőörs

The Malom Valley is a locally protected natural area within the administrative boundaries of Felsőörs. Along a stream bed, you will find many calcareous tufa dams, small waterfalls and distinctive rock formations such as Miske Rock. The watercourse and rock give the valley its own landscape character. The educational trail in the Malom Valley complements these impressions with themed information boards about springs, geological features, birdlife and important tree species. Nature observation and geological topics are therefore both present in the same area, though they are not the same experience.

The Forrás Hill Geological Educational Trail offers a distinct geological focus in the northwestern part of the village. It explores the geological, paleontological and stratigraphic features of a former quarry. The area around Forrás Hill, on the slope of the Balaton Uplands, is popular with hikers, nature enthusiasts and researchers. Those particularly interested in the formation and composition of rock will find a different perspective here than in the Malom Valley: there, the information boards cover birdlife, springs and tree species as well as the stream; at Forrás Hill, the focus is on the geological, paleontological and stratigraphic features of the former quarry.

Exhibition and Organ

A local history exhibition is on display in the rooms of the old smoke kitchen at Civilház. Visits are possible during opening hours by prior appointment. Take this requirement into account when planning and arrange your visit in advance.

The Bűnbánó Magdolna provost church houses a historic organ that is rare and has been preserved in its original condition. Its keyboard is located at the back of the case and is not aligned perpendicular to the front of the organ. This arrangement is a distinctive design feature of the instrument. Together with the exhibition at Civilház, it creates a cultural focus that clearly differs from the village’s nature and geology themes.

The wider Lake Balaton – North destination offers other distinct topics to explore. Boat trips are available in the Tapolca Cave Lake, where the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”) is also on display. The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometres so far. This attraction combines a boat trip with an exhibition and a broader geological context.

Hegyestű offers a different focus: the 337-metre-high mountain lies between Zánka and Monoszló. Its inner face reveals the structure of a basalt volcano that was active around eight million years ago. From the viewpoint at the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can identify the surrounding hills using a panorama board. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia. There, the geological exposure, orientation in the landscape and the region’s variety of rocks all come into view.

Badacsony, in turn, appeals to hikers and wine enthusiasts: the volcanic mountain offers hiking trails and panoramas, and its distinctive geological formations are known as basalt organ pipes. Grapes grown on its slopes are used to make Badacsony wine. These examples in the wider destination differ from Felsőörs’s local attractions.
