Nemesgulacs lies at the western foot of Gulács, a 393-metre-high basalt hill that shapes the local landscape. Hiking, wine and local history give the village a distinctive character. A green hiking trail leads from the centre to the summit; regional yellow and blue hiking trails also pass through Nemesgulacs. If you choose a holiday destination based on how you want to spend your days, these trails offer one point of reference, alongside the church and the local wine offerings.

Hiking on Gulács

The trail from the centre climbs Gulács to the summit. The summit trail is narrow and spiral-shaped, and is suitable for one person at a time. The regional yellow and blue trails also pass through the village. They lead to Sér-kút, a spring on the mountainside. The trails’ destinations include the summit of 393-metre-high Gulács and Sér-kút, a spring on the mountainside. If hiking is your main consideration when choosing where to stay, you can compare Nemesgulacs with other places based on these specific destinations.

Church and local history

The Roman Catholic parish church bears witness to several phases of construction: it was rebuilt from ruins in 1725, reconstructed between 1845 and 1850, and had a tower added in 1853. Its architecture combines neoclassical features on the exterior with late Baroque elements inside. Marble plaques on the walls commemorate those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. In 1989, the first Mindszenty memorial in the country was also unveiled in the church garden. These landmarks make the parish church a tangible point of reference if you are interested in the village’s history and architectural heritage as well as hiking.

The Eőry Manor House stands in the centre and houses a school. The writer Dezső Keresztury spent his childhood and youth in the manor house.

In the North Balaton destination, Tapolcai-tavasbarlang and Hegyestű are among the geological attractions. Boat trips are offered in Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, which also features the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has so far been explored over a length of 14.6 kilometres. Hegyestű, meanwhile, is a 337-metre-high hill between Zánka and Monoszló. There, the inner side of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago reveals its structure; a lookout point on the western edge of the quarry site, together with a panoramic information board, helps visitors identify the surrounding hills.
