Churches and Architectural History

The ruins of the Szent-Balázs Church are a specially protected architectural monument and an archaeological site. Nearby Balatoncsicsó, they stand on a vineyard above Szentantalfa; the vineyard is administratively part of Balatoncsicsó. A priest of the Szent-Balázs parish church is documented in 1333, and the parish was still active in the mid-16th century.

The small, single-nave church probably dates from the 12th century and later became the choir of the Szent-Balázs Church. Around 1300, it was extended to the west with a larger nave, a western gallery and a tower. The cautious dating and subsequent building phases give the church complex a long history. In 2001, the ruins were conserved according to plans by H. Nándori Klára.

The Roman Catholic Szent-Ágoston Church in Balatoncsicsó represents another chapter. Construction began in 1777 under parish priest Jankó Ádám; in 1781, it was consecrated in honour of Bishop Szent Ágoston. The histories of the two churches thus span a period from a presumably medieval structure to a church built in the late 18th century.

Cycling and Wine

The 49-kilometre Nivegy-völgyi Panoráma Cycling Loop passes through Balatoncsicsó. Its total length gives you a concrete framework for including the loop in your travel plans and weighing it against your own daily itinerary. The town is one section of the loop.

Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia. Together, these offer geological orientation and insight into the region’s variety of rocks.

Badacsony offers another distinct connection to the landscape and wine. The volcanic mountain has hiking trails and panoramic views for hikers; its distinctive geological formations are known as basalt organ pipes. Grapes grow on its slopes and are used to make Badacsony wine. Together with the experiences in Balatoncsicsó, this gives a broader picture of the themes available across the wider destination.
