Balatonőszöd combines a lakeshore and cycling route with a range of historic sites. When planning your holiday, it is worth taking a closer look at which part of the town suits your daily routine: swimming, cycling and culture each offer a different focus, and the information about the lakeshore shows that not all of the coast is accessible.

Lakeshore and swimming: the stretch matters

The Balatonőszöd lakeshore is about 2 km long; just over 500 m of it is designated as a freely accessible shoreline. The remaining wooded lakeshore area contains a freely accessible beach and a promenade. Most of the lakeshore is closed to the public. If you want to focus your stay particularly on swimming or the lakeside experience, take these differences into account when choosing the part of town and the location of your accommodation.

The figures for the lakeshore therefore describe two different things: the length of the entire shoreline and the designated freely accessible area. They help you understand the coast without assuming there is a continuous public path along the shore. For practical planning, the freely accessible beach is a different point of reference from the entire shoreline.

Cycling and landscape

The town’s landscape has also undergone a notable change: an area of about 20 hectares that was previously used for agriculture became submerged over the past ten years and turned into a new habitat for aquatic animals. Getting here and finding your way around

You can reach Balatonőszöd by car directly via main road 7 or via a separate junction with a roundabout on the M7, which branches off east of the town. If you are arriving by train, the nearest railway station is in neighboring Balatonszemes, about 2.3 km from Balatonőszöd. The nearest boat landing and sailing harbor for Balatonőszöd are also in Balatonszemes. Check current services and options if they are important for your arrival or day plans.

Churches and local history

The Reformed Church was rebuilt in 1845–1847; much of its original interior furnishings have been preserved. The Mária Chapel was built in 1935 at the initiative of the Balatonőszöd Bathing Association, based on plans by architect Károly Weichinger. The histories of the two buildings offer different insights into the town’s past.

The Szent-Donát memorial is located among the vineyards of Balatonőszöd and is the work of artisan Rudolf Szedleczky. Its relief depicts the saint with a bunch of grapes and a wine funnel. The relief makes a connection to viticulture.

The Tiszttartó House is a 19th-century Neoclassical building. Around 1810, it came into the possession of the Piarists; since then, it served as the residence of the estate manager of the time. Those interested in the town’s architectural and ownership history will find another historical point of reference here.

Other historic sites

The Jewish cemetery lies at the end of Szabadság utca, consists of two sections and includes notable 19th-century tombstones. If you plan to visit, please check local access conditions in advance and be respectful. The listed granary was built in the Baroque style in the second half of the 18th century. It is now in poor condition and can be reached from József-Attila Street.

The Öreg-hegyi rest area is also part of local history: it was inaugurated on 20 August 2011 after local winegrowers proposed its establishment. Together with the memorial among the vineyards, this connection shows that viticulture has also played a role in Balatonőszöd’s history. Choose the town according to what matters most to you: the limited freely accessible lakeshore, the cycling route that runs through the town, or its historical and viticultural connections.
