Church, tree and local history

Monoszló’s Reformed church may have been standing as early as the late 12th or early 13th century. It was originally dedicated to Saint Michael. A cornelian cherry tree grows in the garden behind the church; it was already there during the Napoleonic Wars. The church and tree thus represent two different points in time at the same location: a church history dated with due caution, and a tree whose presence goes back to the time of the wars.

The hills and paths around Monoszló also bear traces of history. The ruins of a windmill that once operated there still stand on Szél-domb. A path leads to Visszhang domb, which is associated with Monoszló’s echo. The writer Károly Eötvös mentioned this echo in his book “Balatoni utazás.” For those interested in local history, the church building is therefore joined by connections to the landscape’s former uses and literary heritage.

Hegyestű and the landscape

Hegyestű lies between Zánka and Monoszló and is 337 metres high. Its northern side was cut away by a former quarry. The almost 50-metre-high quarry face that remains reveals the interior of a basalt volcano: as the lava cooled and solidified, it formed polygonal vertical columns. This makes Hegyestű a distinct landscape feature, different from the local stories of the church, tree and echo.

In the broader destination of Northern Balaton, there is also a lookout point on the western edge of the quarry area, with a panorama board to help visitors identify the surrounding hills. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia. These geological features offer a distinctive perspective on the landscape: you can focus on its visible forms or explore how the rocks and terrain relate to each other.

Local connections and regional interests

Olaszrizling grapes are the main variety grown in Monoszló; smaller quantities of the traditional old varieties Juhfark and Mirkovec are also cultivated. This is another local connection, alongside the church’s history and traces in the landscape. Information about these varieties describes the village’s viticulture, not a specific offering for visitors.

The broader destination of Northern Balaton also offers other areas of interest. Boat trips are available in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, along with the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometres so far. In Tihany, the Levendula Ház uses an interactive exhibition to explore the formation of the peninsula and lavender cultivation; it also offers a craft workshop and a discovery garden.

Another cultural highlight is in Herend: the Porcelain Museum has a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions about the history of the manufactory. The visitor centre introduces porcelain production, its techniques and the traditions of applied art. In workshops, visitors can handle porcelain clay and a brush for painting. Thus, Northern Balaton offers not only landscape and caves, but also crafts and exhibitions.

Monoszló’s own points of interest include the Reformed church, the cornelian cherry tree, the ruins on Szél-domb, the echo and viticulture. Hegyestű adds a distinctly geological perspective to these local themes.
