Postal History at the Museum
The current exhibition at the Postamúzeum, “From Horse-Drawn Carriage to Electric Vehicle,” uses the museum’s vehicle collection to tell the story of postal transport. Original vehicles, models, and audio and film materials show the technological development and changing uses of vehicles employed for postal services. The exhibition therefore focuses not only on different vehicles, but also on how they have changed over time.
The museum building itself is also part of the town’s postal history: it was built in the last quarter of the 18th century as a stable for a postal relay station on the Hunyady family’s Szemes estate. The building has housed the postal museum’s exhibitions since 1962. In the museum garden, a communications memorial created by Ferenc Trischler also commemorates postal and telecommunications workers who lost their lives while on duty as messengers.
Latinovits Memorial and Competition
Founded in 1984, the Zoltán Latinovits Memorial Museum presents the actor’s career in a permanent exhibition of photographs and documents. Zoltán Latinovits was born in 1931 and died in tragic circumstances in 1976. His grave in the Balatonszemes cemetery is regarded as a place of pilgrimage, and the tomb has become a local landmark. The museum and tomb offer different ways to explore Latinovits’s life and legacy.
A competition also bears his name: the national Zoltán Latinovits poetry and prose recitation competition has been held every year in Balatonszemes since 1995 and is an important cultural event in the community. A Medieval Building Element in a Church Still in Use
A visible, unplastered section of wall from the first church in Szemes, built between 1100 and 1200, survives in the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua. It includes a small slit-like window with Romanesque features. The surviving section is considered the oldest architectural monument still to be found on the southern shore of Lake Balaton. It forms part of a building that is still in use: the church is not a ruin.
This combination of early church architecture and present-day use makes the site a different cultural attraction from the postal history or the Latinovits memorial.
